From Grimsby to Milan is a fascinating cross-border partnership between composer, multi-instrumentalist, author and instrument inventor Gayle Young (of Grimsby, Ontario, Canada) and Robert Wheeler (of Milan, Ohio, USA) who is perhaps best known for his involvement in post-punk innovators Pere Ubu as synth player from 1995-2022. The album ocuments Wheeler and Young’s peculiar collective sound, with Wheeler coaxing all manner of sounds from his EML Synthesizer and Young approaching her microtonal zither the Amaranth with her characteristic curiosity and imagination. Their textural, improv-driven approach makes use of this odd instrumentation, showcasing the ability for them to merge into unified sonorities but also contrast one another quite sharply.
