xenopraxis is a pseudonym of Toronto-based ‘schizophonic magician’ Marc Couroux, an exuberant yet somewhat elusive figure who operates at the periphery of numerous artistic practices. During his early career, Couroux was arguably best known as a pianist and champion of living composers, receiving accolades such as “the Glenn Gould of contemporary music” (Musicworks), and the Prix OPUS Award for “Discovery of the Year” in 1998. In more recent times, Couroux has emerged as an artist and thinker who maintains a deep commitment to creative exploration on various fronts including video, sound, performance, and writing. His work has been featured in various contexts across North America and Europe. His typically audacious debut for Halocline Trance (home of ACT!, Myst Milano, Egyptrixx, Stefana Fratila, Colin Fisher), In A Sedimental Mood is a 73+ minute work consisting of 84 individual sections broken up over four sides of vinyl, a sort psychedelic, self-subverting “background music” that draws upon research into psychoacoustics, the neuroscience of music and even the underpinnings of Muzak. Both hypnotic and restlessly relentless, it’s a peculiar work embraces the tactics of sound art, plasticky hyperrealism, bleary eyed experimentalism without falling into any of these categories.
