The second album of Toninato & Thiessen diverges considerably from the acoustic instrumental world of their debut. Where its predecessor unfurled the unadorned duet landscape of Ida Toninato‘s baritone saxophone and Jennifer Thiessen‘s viola/ viola d’amore, Dream of Heat  trades in dark songcraft with rich atmospherics. The pair sing and play synthesizers in addition their aforementioned implements, and they’re joined by Jason Sharp who serves as producer and performs on synth as well. The six constituent works are timely, given the harshness of this year’s cold, as they explore the cycle of death and rebirth inherent to the winter season.
