The latest recording from Montréal-based veteran composer and guitarist Tim Brady, For Electric Guitar is notable for a number of reasons. Coming off a lauded series of 100 guitar compositions/performances, this new two-CD set collects three new works from him, all of which are solo guitar pieces composed for himself. It’s the first of such recordings in his expansive discography since his 2012 release 24 Frames yet even in this more intimate context, the vitality and eclecticism of Brady’s music shines colourfully. Brady references numerous styles and approaches crafting everything from languid ambiences, to (on the titular work) a sort of one-person concerto where contrasts of tone and material mimic the interplay between soloist and orchestra. In between, listeners are treated to elements pulled from the outer reaches of progressive rock and jazz, driving post-minimalism, modernist fragmentation, and even pure texture.  Brady skillfully integrates these various aspects into a whole that’s as cohesive as it is accessible.
