Tarot is the debut collaboration of the duo Super scintillant, which features Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica winner Nicolas Bernier on modular synthesizer and respected bass clarinettist Mélanie Bourassa.
Bernier is known for the remarkable breadth of his output, which encompasses everything from acousmatic composition to collaborations with hip-hop iconoclast Beans of Anti-Pop Consortium. His vast discography spans roughly 50 titles, while his aptitude in fusing visuals with his rich sonic landscapes has led to appearances as a performer and installation artist at leading institutions and festivals worldwide, including Ars Electronica (Austria), Sónar (Spain), MUTEK (Canada), DotMov Festival (Japan), L.E.V (Spain), ZKM (Germany), and transmediale (Germany).
Bourassa works with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Orchestre Métropolitain, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and Les Violons du Roy, in addition to performing across Canada in other capacities, after graduating with an award with great distinction from the Conservatoire de musique de Québec, and further studies in Europe and Chicago.
This pair intertwines seamlessly as performers, their mutual responsiveness partially a product of the fact that Bourassa’s signal is routed directly into Bernier’s modular rig, allowing him to control parameters of his system using her input. While they themselves mix acoustic and electronic sonorities, the music dovetails an array of stylistic traits especially ones from ambient music and meditative strains of contemporary and improvised. Tarot is as melody-forward as it is texturally immersive, a mixture that should no doubt appeal to fans of Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s parternships, Joseph Shabason’s solo work, or Norwegian artists such as Benedicte Maurseth and Arve Henriksen.
