Saxophilia Saxophone Quartet‘s second album Metamorphosis collects a remarkably wide variety of different compositional voices but traces a smooth trajectory connecting each of them.  The group have been a staple of Vancouver’s contemporary music community since 1996, and the versatility they’ve cultivated together shines through here.  Starting with jazz-inflected chamber music of Fred Stride, the disc goes on to explore work by legendary Canadian modernist Violet Archer, the tense, polymorphous vignettes of Beatrice Ferreira, Rodney Sharman‘s textural meditations on Robert Schumann, and finally music by the quartet’s very own David Branter.
