Toronto’s Ryan Scott, a formidable contemporary music percussionist, released the 21st-Century Canadian Snare Drum, a two-disc affair with the Quatuor Bozzini’s Collection QB imprint. While it centres an instrument with a relatively narrow sonic scope, it’s a remarkably varied set that showcases the versatility and pliability of the drum in question. It also features some of today’s most exciting composers, with contributions from the likes of Bekah Simms, Michael Oesterle, Nicole Lizée, Anna Höstman, Andrew Staniland, Emilie Cecilia LeBel, Amy Brandon, and Monica Pearce, artists who explore everything from delicate, stripped-back pieces to peculiar rhythmic invention, intricate electroacoustics to probing the resonances of the snare drum.
