Robert Humber‘s vibrant into air—his debut chamber music release— demonstrates the composer’s singular talent for balancing engrossing adventurousness with accessibility. Beginning with the titular piece, scored for five violins (which also earned him a SOCAN Award), he moves on to mothmouth for three guitars, murmurations for six pianos and singing in circles, scored for solo cello and cello octet. Although it’s possible for these pieces to be performed live by multiple players. here, each of them is executed by a single performer which imbues them with a unique sleekness while gesturing toward the other dimensions of his eclectic artistic practice. This hyperreal collection merges disparate elements plucked from all corners of the concert music landscape. Textural and timbral ideas that one might associate with Lachenmann or spectralism collide with a careful almost romantic melodicism; pulsing figures link to minimalist music but Humber also ventures into the subtle colorations of microtonality.
