Nick Storring began his work as a publicist in 2016, adopting an approach informed by his career as an acclaimed musician/ composer, critic and curator. Over the years, he has continued to to draw from his activity in creative and critical spheres in various ways. His outlook privileges the idea of community and this comes from his own experience. He recognizes that publicity plays a vital role within a broader structure that includes musicians, audiences, advocates (such as journalists, DJs), curators, record stores/ music providers and more, and his work endeavours to honour the distinct value of each of these parts of the community.
Storring’s writing has appeared in the Wire, Musicworks, Exclaim! and other publications as well as in liner notes for releases on labels such as Another Timbre, RVNG Intl, Recital, Idée Fixe, Alga Marghen. As a curator, Storring co-founded the now-defunct DIY venue Ratio in Toronto, and has since partnered with the Music Gallery, Canadian Music Centre’s CMC Presents Series and TONE Festival to present a variety of events with Toronto.
His musical output spans chamber music composition to free improvisation and includes a body of solo recorded work that features his own layered performances on a variety of acoustic and electromechanical instruments. He has received commissions from the likes of Eve Egoyan, the AKOUSMA Festival, Joseph Petric, and Arraymusic, and been featured by the likes of Esprit Orchestra, Késia Decoté, the Madawaska String Quartet, Vancouver New Music and Quatuor Bozzini. His collaborations include film scores, works for dance, and installations such as the piece Tentacle which was mounted at MoMA in 2011.
