British Columbian composer Nova Pon‘s music strives for evocations of ideas and experiences that are both deeply personal and humanly primal. She has composed over fifty works across multiple idioms, and her music has been performed on four continents. Completed in 2022 and premiered in February of that same year, Symphonies of Mother and Child stands as Pon’s largest and most ambitious composition to date. Spanning some 40 minutes and featuring fifteen players, it occupies a considerable musical scope, however, thanks to its personal subject matter—motherhood—it retains a welcome reserve throughout, resisting the potential bombast of its broad palette. Pon’s work frequently employs programmatic elements, but rather than attempting to convey the specificity of narratives, she uses the musical structure to express psychological states or philosophical ideas. As such, this piece navigates everything from profound tenderness to turbulence, capturing the full emotional breadth and vulnerability of motherhood.  Its counterpart World Within (2015) opens the disc with pronounced pulsed, cyclical figures and greater emphasis on brass.  Deriving its entire thematic material from a well-known symphonic theme, Pon adheres to this figure steadfastly, manipulating in a variety of ways to reveal its inner potential.
