Toronto-based composer and performer Nolan Hildebrand expresses a singular curiosity around how both the ethos and sonics of noise and contemporary composition can be blended together. Where other contemporary music composers hybridize in such a way where the “external” elements are tempered for the concert hall, Hildebrand shows no interest in such an approach. If anything, it’s the other way around, with unfettered electronic aggression polluting and intensifying otherwise instrumental works. His debut recording under his own name, the aptly-named Noise Trip Explosion, is set to launch next Friday from Vancouver contemporary music imprint Redshift Records. It may well be the most wild and distorted recording in their catalogue to date.

Hildebrand favours tactics like no-input mixer and opening raw data files as audio and he also interfaces these with the ensemble in various ways, processing instruments using feedback loops or transcribing these electronic sounds for acoustic performance. Through his interest in open-ended notation such as generative open scores, Hildebrand also introduces the boisterous urgency of free jazz into the mix, inviting noted Toronto improvisers such as Colin Fisher and Patrick O’Reilly to interpret his music alongside concert music performers. His forthcoming album is defiant and unique in its sound and methodology yet will certainly pique the interest of noise aficionados as well as fans of composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Mauricio Kagel, Bekah Simms, and Rebecca Saunders.
