NICHOLAS HURT — WEB | BANDCAMP

Guitarist/ composer (and much more) Nicolas Hurt has been a mainstay of the Texas music community for a number of years and in a number of ways. A former member of the band SPEAK (Modern Art Records/ Atlantic),Hurt left the group in 2015 to nurture his interest in solo playing and teaching, earning a pedagogically oriented MMus from University of Texas at Austin. Since shifting to Marfa, TX in 2019, Hurt has hosted the beloved radio program “In Tune” on Marfa Public Radio, NPR station for West Texas, while maintaining an active teaching studio at Sul Ross State University.

The music he performs in his short film Serenade, I Miss You and on its companion album extends from the classical guitar repertoire, but it also reflects Hurt’s longstanding pluralism as a musician.”Some of the pieces were given to me as standard sheet music, and some through a fuzzy voice mail on my phone.”  Featuring music by Zeke Jarmon, Justice Philips,  Claire Puckett  (of Black Belt Eagle Scout, Mother Falcon, Hikes, AKA Claire Glass) and Hurt himself, the album feels remarkably personal, as does its cinematic counterpart.

“Nick, along with what seems like a billion people [in Austin], are not just playing pieces, they’re not just playing scales, they’re actually out there composing and doing the work that they have to do to become artists that transcend the instrument… It’s a beautiful film.”  — Bret Williams, Classical Guitar Insider on Serenade, I Miss You
