Celebrated Canadian saxophonist and composer Nicola Miller launched her debut, Living Things in 2024 with the Cacophonous Revival imprint. Now, the award-winning artist has assembled the same band for a second outing SPIT! due out August 7th from the Canadian label Watch That Ends The Night, home to fellow Riparian Media clients Andrew MacKelvie’s Many Worlds, as well as Quinton Barnes, Michael Cloud Duguay and Alex Lukashevsky. The album will be available on LP, CD, and digitally.
Miller’s all-star ensemble includes Doug Tielli on trombone (who maintains ties with artists such as Eric Chenaux, Rob Clutton, Brodie West, Martin Arnold on top of being an acclaimed singer-songwriter), bassist Nicholas D’Amato (who has been heard onstages that span the Tonight Show to the Hollywood Bowl, Jazz at the Lincoln Center to Montreux), drummer Nick Fraser (who has shared stages and studios with the likes of Kris Davis, Ingrid Laubrock, Lina Allemano, Marilyn Crispell, Joe McPhee, Ben Monder, and William Parker) as well as bass clarinetist and saxophonist Frank Gratkowski (who has variously collaborated with Wilbert de Joode, Achim Kaufmann, Wolter Wierbos, Gerry Hemmingway, Apartment House, Ensemble Modern, Zeitkratzer, and Ensemble Musikfabrik). Gratkowski also served as Miller’s mentor throughout her Masters’. SPIT! is a more extrovert affair than its predecessor foregrounding both layered, intricate avant-jazz ensemble writing and fiery improvisation as well as the group’s keen ear for texture and timbre.
SPIT! is a more extrovert affair than its predecessor foreground both layered, intricate avant-jazz ensemble writing and fiery improvisation alongside everyone’s keen ears for texture and timbre. The preview track/ lead single, now available on Bandcamp and most streaming services—the first of the three-part “Telecommunications” series—exemplifies these traits, beginning in total abstraction and subsequently converging on slow groove. This serves as a foundation for both Miller’s careful compositional approach and also impassioned spontaneity from her and her bandmates.
