Experimental and traditional musics seem like strange bedfellows on the surface, but time and again one finds that the two fields have considerable overlap. With the new trio Mativetsky Amiri Pagé, one finds precisely this blend of outlooks both individually and collectively.

Harpist, and the album’s producer, Sarah Pagé has played with everyone from roots rockers The Barr Brothers to Juana Molina, as well as Nadah El Shazly, Joni Void and Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush. She has also released acclaimed solo recordings that demonstrate an individualistic approach to processed concert harp, which she also employs here. Tehran-born Amir Amiri is noted for both his deep Persian classical training on the santur, and his sonic curiosity. Amiri has worked extensively as a performer, composer, musical director and consultant for numerous Canadian dance and theater companies, orchestras, concert series, and has considerable experience in film and television. He has also been heard alongside groups spanning YlangYlang to Infusion Baroque and also performed with the aforementioned Land of Kush. Shawn Mativetsky, meanwhile, is a celebrated tabla player known for his vast array of interests. A leading disciple of the renowned Pandit Sharda Sahai, he is also a tireless champion of living composers of contemporary music, having collaborated with the likes of and a generous Tim Brady, Nicole Lizée, and Dinuk Wijeratne. In 2024 he also launched his alter-ego Temporal Waves, which frames his primary instrument among analog synthesizers and treatments.

Metamorphose incorporates aspects of Indian and Persian classical musics and juxtaposes them with investigations of rhythm and colour in a hybrid sound that’s tough to pin down. It’s a singular vision that delves deep into the sound and mechanics of each player’s musical background, while leaving space for play and for all of these various threads to intertwine. Each of these three players is as nimble and adept as they are insightful, making for work that puts musicality above superficial displays of virtuosity.
