MEAGHAN WILLIAMS — WEB
Acclaimed Vancouver composer and double bassist Mark Haney‘s Placentia Bay: Summer of 1941 is the final instalment of what he calls his “storytelling trilogy.” After telling the story of daredevil Ken Carter on the “strangely mesmerizing” (according to the Vancouver Sun) Aim For The Roses in 2010 and collaborating with renowned graphic novelist Seth on Omnis Temporalis (2022) he has turned to the story behind the Atlantic Charter on his latest release. However, where his previous releases treated its narrative through spoken and sung text, on Placentia Bay it recedes to a more subliminal layer, providing the foundation for a gorgeous orchestral piece with a solo bass part. And although the work is a sort of concerto for his primary instrument, Haney does not appear as a performer. Instead, the dextrous and lyrical solo part was created specifically for his longtime friend Meaghan Williams, who executes with emotional insight and precision.
