Montréal’s Louise Campbell is a musical polymath and her debut full-length release Sources skillfully weaves together several of the main threads of her multifarious artistic practice. Campbell’s primary instrument is the clarinet and over the course of the four pieces on this album she constructs rich yet spacious sonic environments, attentively layering and shaping the instrument’s characteristic pure tone through the aid of surreptitious processing. Grounded by her intimate knowledge of her instrument and drawing upon her unconventional mastery of ensemble composition, each of the compositions takes great care in establishing a vivid sonic world, before pivoting to offer myriad unexpected pathways to the listener. The music also emerges from Campbell’s copious interactions with other art forms and cultural activities including interdisciplinary art of various kinds, education, community arts facilitation, and even therapeutic contexts has helped her to cultivate the profound and instinctive sensitivity to atmosphere that permeates the album. Correspondingly, while one can engage with Sources strictly as an album it’s also one facet of a larger vision. These works serve as the basis for an interactive outdoor installation (to be mounted June 3 & 4 via Montréal’s TOHU) as well, a work which will situate the music in close proximity to the very water it depicts.
