The provocatively titled Sex Lives of Vegetables not only presents the first monograph recording for revered Vancouver-based composer, conductor and pianist Leslie Uyeda, it also showcases her deep affinity for the poetry of celebrated author (and Officer of the Order of Canada) Lorna Crozier. Uyeda’s extensive and idiosyncratic catalogue of vocal music includes over fifty songs on Crozier’s words and the two also collaborated on adramatic scene for soprano and mezzo-soprano entitled Your Breath, My Breath: Dialogue for a Mother and Daughter. The current recording assembles The First Woman, a collection of four songs and the titular three-volume song cycle (comprising 15 songs) both of which feature Crozier’s texts, and between them, solo piano work Hahawo Shinobite母を偲びて(I Cherish and Honour my Mother). The material is performed by expert interpreters of contemporary music soprano vocalist Heather Pawsey, pianist Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa, and AK Coope on clarinet.
