Kathy Kennedy has been a vital force since the 1990’s, cultivating an artistic practice that straddles numerous fields and approaches. With training in visual art and classical voice, she has come to be associated with the disparate realms of improvisation, electroacoustics sound art, radiophonic art, experimental choral music, site-specific performance, and installation art, and also has strong, tangible ties to the philosophies of R. Murray Schafer and Pauline Oliveros. A central theme that traverses her considerable body of work is the human voice. From Choeur Maha to her Sonic Choreographies series of public, large-scale pieces enlisting live vocal performers and radio many of her pieces employing singing in diverse and unconventional ways. Her solo release Vowel Jams is no exception and translates her fascination with massed vocals to the solo context, seeing Kennedy layering her own singing and vocalizations via minimal software and pedal-based processing. These pieces embody a certain playful quality and often use rhythmic interplay as a sonic anchor. Yet their light-hearted, skewed pop attributes are offset by Kennedy’s profound understanding of voices and how combining them can elicit wondrous, otherworldly effects.
