A new disc of work by pioneering composer Joel Chadabe (1938-2021). Many knew Chadabe as an early collaborator with Robert Moog, but his true legacy goes far beyond. Chadabe’s attraction to synthesizers—and any musical technology he employed—was driven equally by their sonic potential and their capacity for new forms of artistic interaction/ expression. Throughout his entire career, he remained at the cutting edge of innovation, as a composer, educator, and as a designer of musical tools.

Emergence is a career-spanning collection that brings together work ranging from early chamber pieces to recent collaborative electroacoustic compositions, providing an aerial view of his broad interests as an artist. It also includes brand-new realizations of several of beloved Chadabe works such as “Flowers” and “Settings For Spirituals.” And as anyone familiar with Chadabe’s approach will tell you, each performance of his music is different enough that the listener might not even recognize the work.

This landmark release will be coming out via Intelligent Arts (an organization founded by Chadabe’s and currently run by his son Ben) in partnership with Ars Subtilior, imprint of renowned producer/ engineer William Blakeney (Intersystems, Allen Ravenstine, John Luther Adams and others), who works out the legendary Grant Ave Studios in Hamilton, Ontario.
