Calgary, Alberta-based violinist and composer Jeremy Gignoux has garnered considerable interest for his work in folk and jazz circuits, yet Odd Stillness mines a different musical landscape altogether. The album’s underlying concept came about after Gignoux suffered an injury that prevented him from playing. In order to inject momentum into his creative process, Gignoux turned his attention to composing, crafting a series of scores designed for multi-tracked single performers (with the layered trumpet/trombone piece “Pedire” being the lone exception). The pieces involve a fair amount of improvisation, and the performer also records each successive track without listening to the previous ones, only hearing the full arrangement after the fact. To realize these pieces, Gignoux enlisted several trusted friends to enact this process: Jiajia Li (of Ginger Beef), Rebecca Bruton, Robin Tufts, Mark DeJong, André Wickenheiser, Carsten Rubeling, and Keith Rodger. On the album’s final piece Gignoux himself superimposes his violin and viola to produce weightless microtonal ethereality.  The result is hypnotic and beautiful, albeit laced with a hint of friction. The works embrace the gradual unfolding of ambient music, acoustic instrumentation, but also incorporate faint dissonances and textural details
