Hugo Blouin’s deliciously quirky Le buffet, meanwhile presents a culinary-themed journey via ten lively, sharp-edged jazz pieces performed by an all-star ensemble. The album continues Blouin’s established trajectory of mixing conceptual playfulness with nimble, vaguely proggy jazz writing. For this project, he calls upon the acclaimed drummer John Hollenbeck, vocalist Eugénie Jobin Tremblay (of Ambroise and House of Gold), beloved wind player Aurélien Tomasi, celebrated pianist Marianne Trudel, along with distinguished guests: violinist Alissa Cheung (of Quatuor Bozzini), trumpeter Émilie Fortin, backing vocalists Sylvaine Arnaud and Charlotte Layec, as well as Marion Rampal, who takes the lead vocal on one track. Blouin augments the underlying concept by employing actual recipes and interviews gathered from his friends. It’s a move that brings personal warmth to its peculiar thematic and musical landscape.
