Montréal-based composer, pianist, bandleader, and improviser Liberté Anne launches her debut recording with Volume 2 by her group Liberté Anne & FROTAE. This riveting release is due out on Halocline Trance whose diverse and curious-minded roster perflect matches her polymorphous inventiveness.
FROTAE is an acronym for “For Reasons of Tone and Economy”, and it’s a new saxophone quintet that Liberté Anne leads as its composer and director. Her sumptuous microtonal writing for the ensemble brings together elements of patient chamber composition, lyrical jazz-adjacent ideas, ambient music, abstract textures, as well as a certain folkishness quality in its melodic contours. The band is a veritable powerhouse featuring major talents within the Montréal experimental music landscape and beyond. FROTAE comprises Allison Burik (Bellbird, Mali Obamsawin), Naomi McCarroll-Butler (Jeremy Dutcher, Beverly-Glenn Copeland, Pinksnail), Philippe Lauzier (Isaiah Ceccarelli, Xavier Charles, John Butcher et Nadah El Shazly), Geneviève Gauthier (Eric Craven, Kulusé Souriant) and René Zeledon (Hugo Blouin, Vincent Compagna, Carl Lacroix, Diogo Ramos). These interpreter-improvisers collectively render music that elicits peculiar wonder as Liberté Anne probes the spaces between equal tempered pitch, yet also delivers profound visceral power.
