On Érick d’Orion’s new LP and digital release, Mes fantômes, the interdisciplinary audio artist, composer, and improviser leads a seven-piece ensemble, performing electronics alongside Marie-Pierre Brasset on synths, Émile Boucher Cloutier on percussion, Michel Potiron on electric guitar, Réal Gagnon on drums, Stéphane Beaulieu on electric bass, and Nicolas Gobeil on trumpet.
The sound they collectively produce is massive and peculiar; noisy abstraction collides with prog rock-isms, hazy ambient foreboding erupts into free-jazz firestorms while doom metal passages are festooned with percussion that would feel right at home on a 70’s Santana record.
Those familiar with d’Orion might not be surprised with his outlandish concoctions. He’s known as a member of Napalm Jazz and has collaborated with artists including Evan Parker, Martin Tétreault, Otomo Yoshihide, Robin Fox, Ilpo Väisänen, Alexandre St-Onge, Sam Shalabi, Günter Müller, and eRikm, among many others. Given this illustrious list of collaborators, the thematic bent of Mes fantômes is particularly intriguing. The titular “ghosts” refer, as d’Orion puts it in his liner notes, to “influences — conscious or unconscious, chosen, or imposed — that haunt all creativity.”
Mes fantômes does weave several genres together, but it also allows these disparate elements to generate surprising stylistic dissonances along the way, the result is a densely layered whole where these features, overlap, but also smash, and transform into one another.
