Following the release of The Complete Piano Solos (1989–2023), Volume 1: The Plains in 2025, Cheryl Duvall and Linda Catlin Smith release the second instalment of their collaborative set, The Complete Piano Solos (1989–2023), Volume 2: The Underfolding & Early Works. Spanning more than three decades, this new album presents a diverse collection of pieces originally written for artists including John Tilbury, Anthony de Mare, Stephen Clarke, Barbara Pritchard, and others. Together, these works offer a fascinating portrait of Smith’s artistic evolution. They pay tribute to formative influences including Satie, Feldman, Cage, Bach, and fellow Canadian Udo Kasemets while exploring the tension between motion and stillness, and drawing metaphorically on visual art.

Though the unmistakable hallmarks of Smith’s compositional voice—the patient unfolding of ideas and quietly hypnotic sense of time — are already firmly in place in these older pieces, there are some interesting contrasts here that might surprises listeners that are only familiar with her later career. Notably, she occasionally embraces systematic compositional methods (successfully so), as well as wider contrast in dynamics and articulation found.

Throughout the collection, Smith’s distinctive musical personality is brought vividly to life through Duvall’s deeply considered interpretations and exceptional musical sensitivity. The result is a compelling release that offers fresh insight into Smith’s creative journey while building anticipation for the remaining volumes in this landmark recording project.
