Last year, the now-Toronto-based violinist Christopher Whitley made quite an impression with his debut as an interpreter, Describe Yourself (Redshift Records). Featuring an adventurous array of pieces from a diverse assortment of composers, the record received several enthusiastic reviews and his performance of Nicole Lizée’s work “Don’t Throw Your Head in Your Hands” garnered a JUNO award for Best Classical Composition.

The same sessions that produced Describe Yourself also yielded this album, almost as soft as silence, an understated and entirely improvised affair. Wielding a 300+ year-old violin built by the legendary luthier Antonio Stradivari, Whitley unfurls a cohesive set of vignettes that demonstrate both his keen ear for timbre and texture and his gift for melodic/ harmonic contouring. It’s the sort of recording where you might be inclined to second guess that it was generated spontaneously—and for the best reasons.
