Amrita is the Toronto-based duo of Anita Katakkar (tabla) and Kayla Milmine (soprano saxophone) and their self-titled debut is the culmination of their collaborations since 2021.

Milmine and Katakkar first worked together as part of the ensemble accompanying Music and The Shadow People, the radio play by William Parker and Andrew O’Connor presented at NYC’s Roulette and Montréal’s Suoni Per Il Popolo—a fitting introduction to their distinctive musical approach. Since then, the duo has forged a singular path, developing a pared-down yet somehow expansive blend of Hindustani music, jazz, and free improvisation. Intricate rhythmic interplay meets vivid explorations of texture and colour, while spacious, evocative passages balance moments of virtuosic momentum.

Produced by recent Grammy winner Justin Gray and featuring guest appearances from Zaynab Wilson (cajón) and Jonathan Kay (esraj), Amrita’s self-titled debut full-length highlights both Katakkar and Milmine’s compositional voices and instrumental command, while showcasing the uncommon expressive range of their instrumentation.
