For more than a decade Montréal’s Eugénie Jobin has been generating a singular and stunning repertoire of songs under the alias ambroise (alongside various collaborators). Merging aspects of folk, jazz, and experimental approaches with a fondness for poetry, their body of work is mesmeric, curious-eared and personal. While earlier efforts such as 2022’s self-released Bienvenue and 2018’s À la tonalité préférable du ciel (released by Delphine Dora’s Wild Silence label) employed a full-band sound, la premi​è​re caresse goû​te toujours la neige is a sparser, more delicate affair. The mini-album centres Jobin’s voice, piano, synthesizer and idiosyncratic production, all of which comes adorned by accordion from longtime collaborator Frédérique Roy (and fellow member of Sofa Records’ House of Gold).

Also of note is the fact that the music employs poetry from Québécoise prodigy Marie Uguay as its textual foundation. Although Uguay passed in 1981 due to cancer at the young age of 26, her unique output maintains a cherished position in literary circles.
