Born in 1989, Alexandre David’s approach exemplifies the thinking of his generation, but it’s for that very reason that he has carved out such an individual vantage point. Like other internet-mentored members of his cohort, David’s music expresses nonchalant disregard for aesthetic distinctions that not so long ago were held as invincible. His music is a place where gestural complexity, sumptuous melodies, blooming microtonal colour, patient texture, pulse, and unusual timbres all coexist, and without postmodern tropes intervening and reasserting the traditional boundaries between them. The three works collected here do not flit between these supposed extremes; rather, they interweave this assortment of traits, refusing to acknowledge their purported polar relationships with each other.
