On their debut recording Water, Rock, Tree, Sky, the Victoria, British Columbia-based ensemble Aerie Trio presents two works by their very own member, flautist and composer Diane Berry. The first and longer work of the set Vancouver Island Suite is an eight-part piece scored for flute, cello, and piano. Generously melodic, Berry’s writing emphasizes the inherent warmth of this instrumentation, putting the sonorities of the trio in conversation with one another while crafting ingenious blends of them as well. The piece emerged from a collaboration with celebrated local chef, Castro Boateng (of House of Boateng) called The Art of Harmonizing Music and Food where every section of the work—each inspired by a specific place on Vancouver Island—was mirrored by Chef Boateng’s menu, which presented dishes honouring all of the very same locations. The disc’s titular work, meanwhile, employs the novel instrumentation of soprano vocal, flute and clarinet and Berry works deftly within the intrinsic limitations of this ensemble (each voice is monophonic and occupies a very similar register.) Housed in a sleeve adorned with photos taken by Berry’s husband Remi Odense around Vancouver Island, this album vividly evokes its geographical inspiration.
