Adam Hill‘s evocative new recording Dance Card is a direct outgrowth of his Charlottetown Improvisation Laboratory, a project the composer and bass player initiated in the titular city as a means to expand his collaborative horizons. After informal beginnings it transformed into a beloved concert series that lasted two years and featured Hill alongside a fresh set of four other musicians that had never played together each time—all from different musical traditions. 

The co-creators on Dance Card are all alumni of the series and each piece was also crafted for it as well.  However, Hill’s modus operandi here differs when translated to the studio — with many of the tracks, he works one-on-one with different artists, performing as a bassist, producing, and co-arranging their compositions. He also presents three of his own compositions with a different single collaborator on each.

The unique process he employs is what cements the record’s cohesion and keeps it from feeling too much like a compilation. Each composition was recorded as a duet with the various dance partners, however each session also included an improvisational exchange between the two musicians. Rather than presenting the latter on the album, it’s used as raw material for post productions; cut up into percussive sounds, rich pads or textural beds. Whether working with pi’pa virtuoso Tiffany Liu or violinist Karen Graves, harpist Caeda Enright or drummer Matt Bridges, or delving into experimental rock, R&B-ish song, ambient or beyond, Hill’s sonic signature maintains keeps the collection focussed and curious-minded.
